He stated, “I want to reiterate a request we made earlier to the Minister to work with the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources to revoke Act L.I. 2462 2022, which is allowing mining in reserve areas, or to revoke L.I. 2462 on the Environmental Protection Act.”
He claims that it is not in line with the Ministry’s primary responsibility of safeguarding and ensuring the preservation and improvement of this nation’s forests.
Concerning the Ministry’s limited funding for its operations, Mr. Pelpuo also voiced his concerns.
“Mr. Speaker, we are concerned about the low release of funds and low budgeted resource allocation to the ministry, as the Chairman has stated, and we hope that this trend can be rectified.
“I only wish the Minister for Finance would have been here to listen to the fundamental fact that a state’s sovereignty is defined by its land,” he continued.
Mr. Pelpuo cautioned Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, to carry out his duties effectively when funds are allotted to his ministry.
In regard to the nation’s natural resources, he demanded that strict oversight be exercised.
