Bumble is allowing males to initiate discussions on its platform, ten years after its “women make the first move” feature revolutionized the dating app industry.
A new feature called “opening moves” on Bumble allows women to post a prompt for potential suitors to respond to in order to start a conversation. The function undoes the app’s long-standing mandate that women initiate contact with their matches; according to Bumble, this gives women greater control over their dating experiences.
The app’s new feature is part of a bigger relaunch that was revealed on Tuesday by Lidiane Jones, the company’s new CEO, who succeeded founder Whitney Wolfe Herd in her role. The decision was made at a time when dating apps are generally trying to stay relevant since some people are growing tired of online dating and want to make more in-person relationships.
According to Jones, the revamp of Bumble will enable the platform to seize that opportunity.
