Shafik only agreed when co-chair of Columbia’s antisemitism task committee, David Schizer said it would be considered antisemitic.

Teachers have repercussions.

It was the same story with respect to penalizing professors.

Shafik declared during the hearing, “There will be consequences for faculty who make remarks that cross the line in terms of antisemitism on my watch.”

According to Shafik, tenured professor Joseph Massad had been “spoken to” by colleagues in his department after calling the October 7 attacks “awesome” in an online article the following day.

Shafik acknowledged that he was being investigated for making racist remarks, but she then withdrew her statement on his dismissal as chair of an academic committee.

“I do not approve of what he said. Shafik responded, “I am appalled by what he said,” to a query from Representative Tim Walberg. “Someone has spoken to him.”

Massad responded to CNN via email, stating that he was not aware of any investigation prior to today’s meeting and that his chairmanship of the committee was merely coming to an end of the one-year tenure.

Shafik claimed that Mohamed Abdou, a professor who on October 7th posted supportive remarks about Hamas on social media, is currently evaluating his students’ papers but that he will “never teach at Columbia again, and that will be on his permanent record.”

Furthermore, Shafik disclosed that an investigation is underway about the harassment of Shai Davidai, an assistant professor at Columbia Business School.

In a heated address last year, Davidai referred to Shafik as a “coward” for not doing enough to silence “pro-terror” sentiments at the institution.

Shafik stated that there are around fifty complaints against the same professor. It was confirmed by Columbia University that Davidai is being looked into.
