Tech giant Amazon fires hundreds of workers from its cloud computing division

According to the corporation, US-based workers would get transitional health insurance, assistance in seeking new employment, and salary and benefits for at least 60 days. Additionally, they will be qualified for severance money.

Excluding contractors and temporary staff, Amazon employed about 1.5 million people full-time and part-time as of the end of the previous year.

With AWS, Amazon has been concentrating on artificial intelligence (AI). Last month, the company invested in the safety and research start-up Anthropic.

Giants in the technology industry are vying to advance their AI capabilities. One such player is Microsoft, which has invested in Chat GPT.

Amazon eliminated hundreds of positions at Twitch, Prime Video, and MGM Studios, among other companies, in January. A third of Twitch’s workforce, or more than 500 workers, were let go.

The US employment firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas projects that the tech industry will eliminate 168,032 jobs in 2023—a 73% increase from 2022.
