TUC highlights concerns with the Lithium Agreement.

The historical background of mining agreements going all the way back to the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation in 1897 was used by the TUC to highlight the need for a change in the way that natural resource management is approached.

It was expressed that even with the improved fiscal terms over prior accords, the nation’s gains might not be fully realized under the existing fiscal framework.

Before any more actions are taken regarding the lithium lease deal, the TUC suggests that a wider stakeholder consultation be conducted. It asked Parliament not to ratify the agreement in its current form and requested the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources to cease the ratification procedures.

The TUC underlined the need for a better deal that would serve as a model for other agreements.
