The Value Added Tax Amendment Bill 2023, which levies a flat 5 percent tax on commercial property rentals and estate developers’ sales of immovable property, was later adopted by parliament.
The VAT Amendment Bill 2023 also seeks to eliminate VAT on the import of electric cars intended for use in public transit, as well as impose a zero rate on sanitary pads made locally.
In spite of the Minority Caucus’ objections, which raised issues with the imposition of taxes, a voice vote in support of the majority was announced during the second reading stage. The amendment bill was approved with 137 votes in favor and 134 against from the Ayes.
