The letter says, “Even though it is too early to send out invitations to any candidates, it is not too early for candidates who anticipate meeting the eligibility requirements to publicly declare their support for and intention to take part in the Commission’s debates scheduled for this fall.”
The neutral Commission on Presidential Debates co-chair, Frank Fahrenkopf, told CNN he hasn’t seen the letter yet.
Though he hasn’t explicitly stated that he would debate Trump, Biden hasn’t ruled it out either.
Biden stated at the beginning of March, “It depends on his behavior.”
Despite the Republican National Committee’s unanimous decision in 2022 to leave the Commission on Presidential Debates, Trump has stated on social media that he will debate “anytime, anywhere, anyplace.”
Debates used to be limited to civil conversations on matters of public policy, but throughout the last two presidential cycles, Trump has distorted the custom by launching a torrent of lies and erratic outbursts.
