NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox News, and CNN urged the presumed nominees “to publicly commit to participating in general election debates before November’s election,” according to a draft of the letter shared with CNN, which is also a signatory.
According to a person acquainted with the situation, the television networks are looking for other news outlets to sign the letter, which hasn’t been delivered to the campaigns yet. The letter’s existence was first reported by The New York Times.
The letter, which has not yet been signed, states that “tens of millions” of people have tuned in to watch a contest of ideas for the votes of Americans and that general election debates have “played a vital role in every presidential election of the past 50 years, dating to 1976.”
