OpenAI claims to be developing AI that can replicate human speech.

OpenAI stated in a blog post, “We acknowledge that generating speech that resembles people’s voices has serious risks, which are especially top of mind in an election year.” Though it has no immediate plans to make Voice Engine available to the public, the business admitted that significant adjustments are required when AI-generated audio becomes more broadly available. For instance, the business recommended gradually eliminating voice-based bank account authentication.

According to OpenAI, “voice authentication experiences that confirm the original speaker is knowingly adding their voice to the service and a no-go voice list that detects and prevents the creation of voices that are too similar to prominent figures should be accompanied by any broad deployment of synthetic voice technology.”

A voice sample in one language can be used by the voice engine to generate a vocal replica that can talk in several other languages.

In addition to AI-generated audio that sounds like the same person reading the same piece in Spanish, Mandarin, German, French, and Japanese, the blog post features an example of a human reading a passage about friendship. The original speaker’s tone and accent are preserved in every one of the AI-generated samples.
