A spokesperson for the organization stated: “By training with actual meteorologists, our people will be better placed to make positive decisions when there is extreme weather, from speed restrictions to, in extreme circumstances, closing lines.”
The official claimed that although the training won’t qualify the controllers or replace the in-depth projections that Network Rail now employs, it will assist them in “becoming more informed and well-rounded decision-makers.”
Network Rail announced plans to improve and strengthen drainage on rail lines in addition to providing weather training. In addition, it plans to improve embankments and cuttings, hire 400 more drainage engineers, and install CCTV and sensors at flood locations to track movement.
It stated that trains will be able to go faster in stormy conditions if new technology is implemented.
On the trains, severe or even deadly occurrences can be brought on by poor drainage and heavy rain. Three people were killed and six injured when a train derailed in 2020 in Carmont, Aberdeenshire, due to debris that had washed out of an incorrectly constructed drainage ditch.
In September 2023, Network Rail acknowledged a number of errors and faced criminal penalties.
