To combat the consequences of climate change, Network Rail plans to train hundreds of workers to become “amateur meteorologists.”
The public train authority said that it will invest £2.8 billion on weather-related initiatives over the following five years.
Climate change, according to its manager, Andrew Haines, is “the biggest challenge our railway faces.”
“The extreme weather of the past year, which has seen an unprecedented 14 named storms, has taken its toll on our railway, with experts predicting more of the same to come,” he stated.
Climate change warnings that could interrupt travel
According to a spokeswoman, it has forced Network Rail, the company that owns and operates the trains, to “relentlessly” rebuild embankments and cuttings because of an increase in landslips brought on by greater rains, something that British Rail never had to do.
The organization stated that “Hundreds of key operational staff will attend Network Rail’s new ‘weather academy’ to help make them ‘amateur meteorologists'” .
