‘Not many people are aware of this story of my life, but standing before you as though in a lecture hall, takes me back to this memory, many years ago, after serving for three terms as a member of parliament and minister, I made the decision to leave politics and pursue a doctorate degree, with the intention of returning to teach in a university that had just been established in Ghana.
The hand of destiny intervened and I received the calling to serve my country in the higher office as vice president and later, as faith will have it, as president of this great nation, he said.

Ghana’s president from 24 July 2012 to 7 January 2017 was John Dramani Mahama.
From January 2009 to July 2012, he was Ghana’s vice president.
From 1997 to 2009, he represented Bole Bamboi in the legislature. During the previous NDC administration, he also held the positions of deputy and minister of communication.
