According to Marcio Astrini, executive secretary of the Climate Observatory, a network of civil society organizations, Lula must undo Mr. Bolsonaro’s legacy by reestablishing environmental protection agencies, defrosting the Amazon Fund, and combating criminal activity in the Amazon.

Brazil is back in the climate game, he claims, but if the new government doesn’t keep its promises, civil society won’t be afraid to challenge it.

“We will support the government when it succeeds, but if it fails, we will criticise them.”

But according to Roberto Waack, a businessman and chair of the Arapyau Institute, it won’t be simple for Lula to follow through on his lofty promises.

“The world must be ready to accept failures or mistakes. The political climate in Brazil makes it a complex issue, and we will experience setbacks “said he.
