The much-loved “Matrix” film franchise is set to grow with the release of a fifth installment, which executive producer and original co-writer Lana Wachowski is spearheading.

The film’s company, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, sent a press release on Wednesday stating that Oscar-nominated screenwriter Drew Goddard, together with producer Sarah Esberg, will write and direct the picture. (Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group is a division of Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN.)
Goddard “came to Warner Bros.,” according to a statement released on Wednesday by Jesse Ehrman, President of Production at Warner Bros. Motion Pictures.
with a fresh concept that, in our opinion, would be a fantastic way to carry on the Matrix universe, paying tribute to the work that Lana and Lilly (Wachowski) started more than 25 years ago and providing a special viewpoint based on his personal passion for the show and its characters.
There are currently no details available on the plot or the characters, including whether or not Keanu Reeves, star of the “Matrix” franchise, will reprise his legendary role as Neo.
CNN contacted Reeves’s representative regarding the new project, but they did not reply right away.
