According to a 2022 report by Human Rights Watch, attacks and atrocities by armed Islamist groups increased in 2021, wrongful killings by state security forces and pro-government militias during counterterrorism operations persisted, and the humanitarian situation grew worse. All of these factors contributed to a marked deterioration in Burkina Faso’s human rights and security situation.
