On Wednesday, the app shocked several Instagram users by notifying them that some of their photographs had been permanently removed and were not retrievable from the app’s Stories archives.

On some Stories, users encountered the message “This story is no longer available.” Owing to a technical malfunction, the story is currently unavailable. Although this problem has already been resolved, your narrative cannot be changed.

Instagram’s parent company, Meta, claimed that only those whose Stories were lost will see the notification, but it would not disclose the number of affected users.

“We found and fixed a bug that caused some people’s Story highlights and archives to be deleted. Unfortunately, we are unable to restore these stories, and we’re letting people know in the app if they’re impacted,” a Meta spokesperson said Wednesday.

By July 2025, according to Meta, the error notice would no longer appear on the black screen.

Posting on Instagram Stories is less serious and more informal. Posts with text, images, or videos that vanish after a day can be uploaded by users. Additional unique content can be added to a carefully vetted list of close friends or left as a story highlight on your profile indefinitely.

Personalized with text, animations, music, filters, and interactive elements like polls, stories are not like regular photos. Many users use their Story Archives as a photo journal, posting everything from funny memes to slick poolside shots from a beach vacation, including screenshots of Spotify songs to showcase their musical tastes.

Instagram even displays “memories” in the archives section, bringing up a historical account of the user’s actions from previous years on that same day. Some users keep images and movies in Story Archives as well.

Instagram stories are automatically published to the Story Archives, which is what the problem affected along with the Story Highlights. Users do not automatically store tales to their camera roll unless they enable an option.

The problem is another example of why it can be risky to rely solely on one type of media backup. Regardless of how reliable the company, users should make sure they backup their precious memories by storing photos, movies, and other information outside of apps.
