Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, is developing a separate, text-based social network app.
It might compete with Mastodon, Twitter’s decentralized rival.
We’re investigating a standalone decentralized social network for exchanging text updates, a spokeswoman told the BBC.
“We think there is a need for a dedicated area where public personalities and creators may offer timely information about their interests.”
Meta may profit off the current upheaval at the Elon Musk-led company, where cost-cutting has been rampant, by developing a Twitter-like software.
Since Elon Musk took control of the social media network late last year, Twitter has struggled to maintain its advertising base.
