In an ongoing lawsuit for defamation brought by voting technology company Smartmatic due to the network’s dissemination of inaccurate information on the 2020 election, right-wing cable channel Newsmax refuted allegations on Friday that it purposefully deleted or withheld internal emails.

Previously, Smartmatic’s attorneys alleged that Newsmax had falsely said that it had turned over all of the papers before the discovery process was over, “concealing over 200,000 documents” and “making multiple material misrepresentations to the court.”

However, the network said in filings on Friday that it never intended to conceal anything and that the great majority of the purportedly fresh content was simply copies of previously released documents. The claims are “implausible inferences,” according to Newsmax, and are “nothing more than speculation.”
