A bill that President Biden signed into law gives Byte Dance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, nine months to sell its share in the app or risk having it prohibited in the US. TikTok has said that it will take this to court.

TikTok estimates that 1.5 million businesses in the UK use the app.

Since a quarter of her current sales originate from the US, Isobel Perl, the creator of Perl Cosmetics in London, is concerned about the potential effects of a ban.

Among all the social media apps, Isobel Perl claims her cosmetics website receives the greatest traffic from TikTok.

After losing her job during the pandemic, Ms. Perl started her skincare and accessory company. She uses apps like TikTok to increase visitors to her website.

She claimed that during the first six months she was “just figuring out how to run a business on her own,” and the brand didn’t truly take off until she began utilizing TikTok.

“I mostly use TikTok to drive sales to our website; of all the social media apps, it drives the most traffic.”.

She has been expanding her business outside of the UK with the help of the app.

“TikTok is quite a unique way of reaching customers,” therefore a ban in the US “could be potentially devastating to businesses in the UK,” the spokesperson stated.
