Along with two other suspects, Williams Kwofie, 17, and Emmanuel Kojo Bronie, 17, the main suspect, Kwame Ato Asare Ani, 21, who was shown in the viral video insulting police officers at a galamsey site in Axim, Western Region, has been detained.
The Western North Region’s Boinso, a town close to Enchi, is where the three suspects were taken into custody.
After a video showed Kwame Ato Asare Ani and three illegal miners assaulting a police officer at a galamsey site to the point where the officer had to kneel down to apologize went viral, the footage led to the declaration of Kwame Ato Asare Ani as a wanted person. He fled, and the police issued a wanted poster for him.
On Friday morning, April 21, 2023, a local from Boinso recognized the culprits in a local bar and immediately alerted the police, who arrived at the scene to make the arrests.
The Enchi Divisional Commander questioned the three suspects about the video that was going around on social media indicating their involvement in harassing the officers present at Axim, and they admitted that they were the ones who attacked the policemen in the video due to some financial issues.
